Coppice make footballing debut

January 3, 2026

White Coppice Cricket Club made its eleven-a- side footballing debut away to Wyre Wanderers on Saturday afternoon.

In bitterly cold conditions, seventeen brave Coppice cricketers took to the field in a bid to help raise money for club funds with the added goal of shifting a few festive pounds.

Against a side with much more experience of playing together in that format of the game, Coppice battled hard and went in at half time 2-1 down with Ryan Adderley getting his name on the scoresheet for the visitors.

The second half was a tougher prospect as legs began to tire and a multitude of subs were made to give people minutes which meant a few players playing in unfamiliar positions.

The half did still produce moments of positivity for the mighty Coppice though. The vertically challenged Adderley managed to double his tally for the match with a neat header from a Jake Smalley corner and without a doubt the best moment of the game occurred when Max Lawrenson scored from inside his own half which led to applause from watching supporters on the sideline.

Go Pro footage will soon be released of Lawrenson Jr’s wonder strike and it is certainly worth a watch.

An honorary mention must also go to the cricket club’s all time leading appearance maker Jeff Smith who saved a second half penalty following a challenge from Chairman Paul Dobson that could’ve been mistaken for attempted GBH. Smith’s save low to his left hand side sent the animated sub’s bench into euphoria.

All in all the match has allowed the club to add another £100 to the GoFundMe campaign and has also provided an opportunity for more team bonding outside of cricket.

Over the winter months the same group of lads, amongst others, have been playing 5-a-side each week which has added another £150 to the club’s kitty. A huge thanks goes to Jamie O’Dwyer for organising this.

Our next fixture isn’t scheduled yet but watch this space..
