Dobson signs off White Coppice season with match-winning six

September 16, 2026

It was fitting that White Coppice’s most successful season in living memory should end with the most dramatic finale imaginable.

As White Coppice 3rd XI chased Little Valley’s total of 134 all out, veteran Paul Dobson swung his bat lustily one last time.

The 64-year-old, who only hit the first six of his career in August, didn’t have to wait long for his second as he cleared the ropes and lifted his arms aloft like a triumphant warrior.

Speaking afterwards, Dobson explained: “It was exactly the same shot as last time, low full toss on leg stump dispatched just behind square.

“Unsurprisingly, it was not planned in any way and was followed by a slightly stunned response then a huge celebration when I realised it had gone for six and won the game.”

It was the perfect way to bring the curtain down on a season that had seen both the 1st and 2nd XIs promoted.

Bowling first, Oliver Mawdesley and Hisham Changi took two wickets apiece, while Marcus Barretto added an eighth victim to his haul for the season, with Joe Seager taking two good catches. Dan Warbrick & Phil Caswell also bagged wickets.

Fresh from his heroics in the 1st XI on Saturday, Tom Lloyd couldn’t repeat the feat on Sunday and was dismissed for an early duck.

Changi (26) and Seager (18) consolidated before Matt Phillipson capped a memorable weekend with a top score of 40.

Captain Tom Dulson hit an unbeaten 25 before Dobson sealed a four-wicket win with his latest six.

Afterwards, Dulson gave a speech in the dressing room about how much the 3rd XI has developed over the season.
